A Microcosm of Devastation | EXPANDED Fulbright Analysis

A Microcosm of Devastation by Thiyagarajah Arasanayagam

Have you ever felt intruded (by an unexpected visit from an old friend or a total stranger, etc.) in your life, so that the encapsulated rhythm/flow of life was disrupted momentarily? If so, you can better relate to this story.

Towards the first quarter of the play we only get introduced to 3 characters: boy, old woman, and the girl – that too in an awkward setting. Polishing a shoe is nothing out of the ordinary, but polishing a gun keeping vigil night after night (obsessively) at the edge of uncertainty, doubt and suspicion? Welcome to the 1983 Sri Lankan Civil War. You better first have some insight into that as a prerequisite to understanding the play (the current setting, and the events that lead to the subsequent thickening of the plot.)
